Dia dhaoibh a chairde, hello friends, and welcome to the September update! We just managed to sneak the update into this month, but with good reason!
We’re very excited to share that the PDF of Chapters 1 & 2 of theWanderer’s Handbook for Beyond the Woods for Legend in the Mist is now available to download! These chapters cover everything you need to know about life in Céad Darach, plus a tantalising introduction to the wider world of Tír Nascath.
Also included in this preview bundle is:

The map of Tír Nascath PDF (both the labelled version for Narrators and the unlabelled version for the Heroes who are uncovering its mysteries), created by acclaimed fantasy cartographer Jared Blando
- The sticker sheet PDF, featuring key locations and landmarks that can be printed out and placed on the map to track your adventures.

Digital Tokens for easy use in online games or map editing.
- A pronunciation guide, and Ogham runes to use in your game.
Keep in mind that this is not the final version of the book! These chapters serve as a stepping stone to the full release, and there will be some changes as we continue working on the game, such as rule specifications, editing and proofreading, and brand new art. There are also a few @@s instead of page references for the chapters that aren't included. All of this will be sorted in the final release, don’t worry!
Downloading the PDF
By now you should have received an email from DrivethruRPG with a link to redeem your free copy of the Wanderer’s Handbook. If you don’t have one already, we recommend creating a DrivethruRPG account. This will make it easier to access your PDFs in the future.

A New Face in This Neck of the Woods
Hi everyone, my name is Alex Cahill, and I’m the new producer on Beyond the Woods for Legend in the Mist!
As an Irishman with a love for stories, I’m delighted to be working on something so close to home and being reminded of the rich history and mythology of our little island.
With a background in creating TTRPGs that focus on characters’ personal stories and growth, such as A Life Well Lived and Victoriana for 5e, I love creating narrative-driven games, and the Legend in the Mist system is a perfect encapsulation of the narrative driving the gameplay. It’s been so fun diving into the system and seeing the potential it has to create epic tales and memorable moments around the table, and translating the 5e rules for Beyond the Woods into something so accessible and character-driven has been a blast!
I’m really excited to see what we can achieve with this ruleset, especially bringing a different tone and setting to Legend in the Mist. I’m also looking forward to sharing this journey with you all, and hearing what you have to say about the rules, themebooks, and gameplay once the books are ready to play.

What’s Next
We’re hard at work on the next chapter, Your Hero. It’s a whopper of a chapter, filled with all sorts of new themebooks, tropes, fellowships, and equipment that allows players to create the hero that will venture beyond the woods and explore the wilderness of Tír Nascath.

Dia dhaoibh a chairde, and welcome back. This month we have a few fun tidbits to share, so let’s dive in.
First up, the results of our Community Vote! You all voted to see which creature from Irish myth would be added to Beyond the Woods, and the winner, with 36.9% of the votes iiiiis… the Fear Liath! The Fear Liath, or ‘grey man’, is a Slenderman-like entity from Irish and Scottish folklore. He manifests as dark, man-shaped fog and haunts roads and cliffsides. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see what our art team creates for the Fear Liath. As soon as we have some sketches, we’ll be sure to share them!
The Bean Sí
Speaking of monsters, we wanted to share a bit of lore (and some stunning art illustrated by Siman Vlaisavljević) for one of our favourite creatures from Irish folklore, the Bean Sí.
The wail of the Bean Sí fills the hearts of all who hear it with dread, for it heralds only one thing — death. Storytellers and common folk argue over whether the Bean Sí herself is the bringer of death, or if she simply foretells it, but in the end it matters little: when you hear the wail of the Bean Sí, someone you know will die.
Bean Sí are strange faeries from the Otherworld who often take the form of a woman in mourning. They are sometimes seen sitting atop stone walls near the homes of the sickly, clad in dark, ragged dresses, and weeping while they brush their hair with a comb made of bone. Some claim to have seen dark feathers where the Bean Sí’s hair should be, or growing upon their arms. This has led many to believe the Bean Sí are heralds and servants of the Morrigan, goddess of death and fate, though there is no way to know for certain.
Like many faeries, Bean Sí have a terrible fear and hatred of iron.
Despite what many believe, Bean Sí are not inherently malevolent creatures. They are drawn to death and sickness, but they rarely inflict it on others — unless someone is foolish enough to steal their comb. When a Bean Sí’s comb is taken, it relentlessly haunts the person, wailing outside their window each night to drive them to madness and exhaustion. The only way to end this torture is to return the stolen comb, which is usually done by holding it out a window (often clasped in iron tongs, lest the holder be pulled out as well). Once the Bean Sí has her comb, she drifts away — though many survivors of the Bean Sí claim that throughout the rest of their lives they have glimpsed her in the corner of their eye or heard her mournful cry drifting on the distant wind.
New Party Member
We’re excited to share that a new hero will soon be joining the Old Oaks team as Producer on Beyond the Woods for Legend in the Mist! We’ll do a proper introduction next month, but we are so happy to have a new adventurer by our side. We have a lot of irons in the fire here, so having a dedicated Producer for Beyond the Woods for Legend in the Mist means it will get the care and love it deserves.

Hello friends, we hope everyone is enjoying the summer. We’re back with a short update this month. Firstly, we’ve decided to leave the Community Vote open until the end of August. This vote is to see what new creature is added to Beyond the Woods. We’ve had a good response so far, but we want to make sure as many of you lovely backers as possible have a chance to vote for your favourite gribbly monster. To vote, just follow this link, and here’s a reminder of your options:
- 🍺 Clúrachán: The Clúrachán (or Clurichaun) is a cousin to the Luchorpán (Leprechaun), and is a mischievous and fun-loving faerie. They enjoy a drink and usually haunt pubs and breweries.
- 🦦 Dobhar-Chú: The Dobhar-Chú (possibly meaning ‘water hound’) is the King of the Otters. Though that might sound cute, they are a fearsome creature that kills both people and animals and drinks their blood!
- 🧜 Murdúchann: Murdúchann (commonly known as Merrow) are akin to sirens or mermaids and are tragic and sometimes malevolent creatures that often become infatuated with mortals.
- 🕵️ Fear Liath: The Fear Liath, or ‘grey man’, is a Slenderman-like entity from Irish and Scottish folklore. He manifests as dark man-shaped fog, and haunts the roads and cliffsides.
We won’t say who’s winning, but it's tight so far, so be sure to cast your vote!
On the book production side of things, we’re currently working on getting the lore sections into layout. We hope to share a preview PDF of these chapters with you next month!
And lastly, a few folks have asked us if we’ll be at GenCon, but sadly we won’t be attending this year. We love GenCon, but it's quite a trek from little old Ireland!

Due to fluctuating shipping rates, we will be charging for shipping and related taxes (if applicable) at a later date.
We will keep you updated through Kickstarter and will notify you once shipping fees and any associated taxes are added to your pledge.
Pledge Over Time
Any backers who elected to Pledge Over Time will receive their surveys when the final payment has cleared.
D&D 5e and Legend in the Mist PDFs
If your pledge or add-ons included any Beyond the Woods 5e or Legend in the Mist items, you should have already received an email from DrivethruRPG allowing you to redeem your PDF copies. If you don’t already have one, we recommend creating a DrivethruRPG account. This will make it easier to access your PDFs in the future.

What Next?
At the moment, we’re finalising the book outlines for both the Wanderer’s Handbook and Lorekeeper’s Guide, and creating a big list of what needs to be converted from 5e and what new content we need to create. This is a really fun part of the process as, even this early, you start to see the book take shape. We’ll have a bigger update on this soon.
Next month, we’ll be opening polls to let you fine folk vote on what critter gets added to the book! We’re really looking forward to this and expect a fierce monster battle to see who makes it in.
